3 August 1991 - Welkom

2 Heats of 8 laps each

There were problems in practice for Deon Joubert in the Ashley-prepared 535i, which suffered a broken crankshaft, but the engine was rebuilt overnight with parts borrowed from teammate Tony Viana. Fastest in class B was the ever-determined Johan Coetzee in the Gearmax Skyline.

Viana led convincingly during heat one, but behind him was a close battle for second between Deon Joubert and Johan Coetzee, with Joubert taking second place two laps from the end.

Joubert took the lead in the second heat, with Coetzee, Viana, Wilford and Dunkerley in close pursuit. By lap four, Viana was in the lead with the unwieldy Opel V8 of Johnny Eekhout among the class B cars. A spin on lap 5 by Eekhout delayed Coetzee and Dunkerley, resulting in another 1-2 for BMW, with Viana taking first place from Joubert. Viana’s win was all the better for achieving a new class B lap record of 1 m 34.95s.
