20 April 1991 - Welkom

2 Heats of 8 laps each

Viana qualified on pole at his home circuit, followed by Coetzee in the Skyline and then Joubert. The BMWs had the upper hand in the first heat, with Viana taking the flag and Joubert second. The second heat saw a titanic battle for first place between the 535i of Viana and Coetzee’s Skyline, with Viana only just taking first place by out-dragging the Skyline over the line. Joubert came in a lonely third with the rest of the pack behind. However, Viana was excluded from the results of Heat 2, tipping the scales at 1193.7kg. The BMWs were now required to weigh a minimum of 1200kg.
