27 October 1990 - Kyalami

2 Heats of 10 laps each

The Winfield 535i of Viana was joined by the other class B car of Deon Joubert sporting BMW factory colours. Joubert was thrilled by the power of the new car, but Viana was still trying to come to grips with the handling of the Ashley-designed machine. A rushed practice session at Welkom was unable to change anything significantly. During practice, Viana went off avoiding another car and damaged the steering rack. An appeal was made over the PA for a loan steering rack for a 3-series BMW, which was answered by a spectator. However, there was not enough time to swap over the steering rack, and Viana missed Heat 1. During Heat 2, Viana and Joubert diced early on before Viana pulled away, but Viana was still not happy with the handling of the car.
