Tony Viana was absent from this race, recovering from cancer surgery. Johan Coetzee led class B in the first heat, followed by Deon Joubert and Paddy Driver in the Mazda RX7, but Joubert quickly passed Coetzee along Beach Straight to take the lead. Coetzee fell out of the race and Joubert finished first in class, followed by Paddy Driver in second place. In heat 2, Joubert led Coetzee from the start line, followed by Paddy Driver. Coetzee took Joubert going into Cocobana and it was a tight race between the two of them. Joubert started to fall back due to engine issues, but soldiered on to take second place in class B behind Coetzee, with Driver coming home third.
